Layering tips for cold weather using hoodies, fleeces and polos

It’s official – the cold weather has arrived! As winter approaches, it’s more important than ever to consider whether or not your team’s workwear is up to the job. The right winter workwear keeps your workers comfortable and safe, and enables them to do their jobs without any distractions – and that’s where we can help.

Here at City Workwear, we’ve been providing personalised workwear for the last ten years, and we know how much of an impact clothing can make in the colder weather. With our extensive collection of hoodies, fleeces and polos, you can keep your team warm on even the chilliest of days! Here are a couple of our top layering tips to keep in mind when outfitting your team!

How can layering keep your team warm?

When the cold weather hits, layering can make a world of difference. Wearing several layers traps warm air between each garment, and can actually provide better insulation than a single thick layer. What’s more, layering enables your team to easily adapt to changing weather conditions, adding and removing garments as needed to stay comfortable. So, how does layering work? For maximum effect, you’ll need three specific layers – a base layer, a mid-layer and an outer layer.

Base Layer

First of all, let’s start with a base layer. This is the layer closest to your skin, and it has an important role to play. Even on the coldest winter days, your body will produce sweat, and when it evaporates, it can actually make you feel even chillier. Side effects range from discomfort and chafing to fatigue and even hypothermia. To avoid this, choose a moisture-wicking base layer to keep your workers dry. Something like our Pro RTX Wicking Polo is perfect, providing durability and ensuring freshness all day long. As well as being functional, its knitted ribbed collar and cuffs create a stylish, polished look so that customer-facing staff can look and feel their best all through winter.

Mid-Layer

Next, you’ll need a mid-layer. Hoodies and fleeces make great mid-layers, and come in a range of styles and thicknesses to suit your team’s individual needs. When choosing your mid-layer, you should be looking for something insulating yet breathable. Our Spiro Microfleece Hoodie, for example, uses thermal microfleece technology and lightweight insulation. With its full-zip design and hood, your workers can adapt as needed. It also offers breathable construction and quick-dry fabric to keep them comfortable without restricting their movement. Best of all, it produces a streamlined, neat effect so that your team can look professional and put-together while staying warm.

Outer Layer

Finally, there’s the outer layer, or the “shell”. This is the outer barrier between the wearer and the cold winter air, so it needs to provide proper protection against both wind and rain. Again, breathability is key. Your outer layer needs to let moisture from sweat escape so that you stay dry and warm. The kind of layer you need really depends on conditions and activity levels. For example, on days where the winter weather isn’t as severe, something like our Core Lightweight Jacket is ideal for layering. Designed to keep you protected from wind and drizzle, it has a 70gsm breathable mesh lining and both back and chest venting to keep your workers warm and dry on milder winter days.

On the other hand, if you’re facing more extreme weather, we also have options. Our Stormtech Olympia Shell Jacket is designed with challenging weather conditions in mind, using H2XTREME® 5,000/5,000 waterproof and breathable technology for maximum protection. It comes with a number of handy features, including critically sealed seams, an adjustable attached hood and an internal, full-length storm flap. Again, when your workers are representing your business, they also need to look good – and in this tailored jacket, they can stay warm and protected in style!

Add accessories for further protection

As well as layering, it’s also good to consider how accessories can help during the cold weather. For hats, our Beechfield Thinsulate™ Patch Beanie is chic, light, and guarantees outstanding winter protection. Similarly, the Beechfield Morf® Original Neck Warmer keeps out even the harshest winds and is breathable and reliable.

Finally, gloves! Our Result Winter Essentials Softshell Thermal Gloves are waterproof, wind-proof and breathable, offering a microfleece lining for extra warmth. Crucially, they’re also lightweight and flexible, enabling your team to stay dexterous, safe and efficient while working.

That’s all the essentials covered! If you’re looking for new garments to keep your team comfortable throughout winter and beyond, you’re in the right place.
