Stay warm, stay safe: our top tips for winter workwear

Winter can be a challenging time for outdoor work. The chilly temperatures can be trouble enough on their own, but they’re also often coupled with adverse weathers like rain, snow and hail – all of which can be not just uncomfortable, but outright dangerous on their own. That means it’s essential to make sure that every team member is properly attired – not just for comfort reasons, but safety too.

The right workwear is very much our area of expertise here at City Workwear – so here are our top tips for choosing and wearing the right winter workwear to ensure that everyone is warm and protected!

  1. Layer up wisely

Layering is key to staying warm in cold weather, so for that reason alone, it’s always a good idea to start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from the skin. From there, you can then add further insulating layers like fleece or wool for warmth, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to shield against the elements – we’ve certainly got no shortage of workwear coats and jackets for you to choose from here at City Workwear! This versatile approach allows you to adjust your clothing according to fluctuating temperatures and activity levels.

  1. Choose the right fabrics

It’s always a good idea to prioritise fabrics that provide insulation while remaining breathable and moisture-wicking. Wool and synthetic materials like polyester or polypropylene are excellent choices for base and insulating layers, as they retain heat even when wet. Look for outer layers made from waterproof and breathable fabrics or similar membranes to keep you dry and comfortable. 1. Prioritise safety features

In addition to warmth, the best winter workwear should also prioritise safety features in its design, to protect wearers against hazards such as low visibility and slippery surfaces. Another reliable approach also involves choosing garments with reflective strips or high-visibility accents to enhance visibility in dim light or inclement weather conditions. (We’ve got plenty of hi-vis options to choose from at City Workwear.)

For footwear, consider non-slip soles and waterproofing to prevent slips and falls on icy or wet surfaces.

  1. Don't forget about accessories

Accessories play a crucial role in winter workwear by providing added protection for extremities. Insulated gloves or mittens, for example, are great for keep hands warm and functional. They’re especially helpful for anyone working at height, as they’re invaluable for helping team members to retain their grip in particularly chilly environments, and in turn helping to reduce incidents of slipping, or dropping heavy objects.

In the same vein, in these sorts of conditions it’s also best to wear a thermal hat, beanie, or similar headwear to retain heat and protect the head from heat loss. In fact, you might want to consider wearing thermal socks and waterproof boots to keep feet dry and comfortable throughout the day.

  1. Maintain proper fit and mobility

This is just as crucial, but often overlooked – you’ll also want to ensure that your winter workwear fits well and allows for freedom of movement. Bulky or ill-fitting clothing can restrict mobility and impede performance, especially in high-paced industrial or commercial environments, thereby increasing the risk of accidents or injuries. So when you’re picking out the perfect workwear for your team, it’s a good plan to choose garments with adjustable features like drawstrings or Velcro straps, to give them wiggle room to customise the fit and accommodate additional layers comfortably.

Those are just a couple of our top tips – you may well be able to think of a few of your own!
